Day1 - Ride to San Lameer

Started a little late. That storm last night delayed my departure by 4 hours.

About 40km's out of town just past Thaba Trails. All is good .
Had to fiddle with a few things like saddle height etc, but all new additions seem to be working. Liking the downhills.
This is the Heidelberg Club. I've been struggling from about the 55 km mark and am happy to have made it here.
So I'm having a beer and thinking about what the problem may be.
I've asked these okes to help me think about it. They seem to be quite obliging. It
is a major problem,  so we may have to think about it for quite a while.
This pub was established in 1888, the oldest in Gauteng. So this is turning into an educational tour. Who would have thought. ..
I'm glad to announce that we have successfully diagnosed my problem.  Apparently I'm a drinking man with a cycling problem.

In order to cross this river in Heidelberg I had to walk across this bridge or ride a very long way round.
Two security guards chased me and produced a set of handcuffs for my impending arrest. I presume that a few bucks would have made this problem go away, but I was in no mood to patronize. I'm not sure whether it was my invitation challenging them to try to arrest me or my Orlando Pirates shirt, but eventually sanity prevailed. We joked and laughed and I was told what a reasonable person I was. We may even exchange Christmas cards.

Did not like the look of this! The prevailing wind was in to me and stiffening. Beside making the going tough,  it promised to bring rain and lighting. Luckily, apart from a few drops, it stayed away.
First tunnel.
I tried to book into a place called Fortuna. The reception was closed so I dialed the cell no.
I was refused accommodation.  It seems that for some people a guy on a bicycle conjures up images of a toothless railway employee.
I wanted to sleep out, but the weather and erecting a hammock at night was not very appealing.
I ended up in Balfour with these wonderful people owners and family members of Li Rina Guest Lodge. A few castle lights made me feel right at home and they offered to do my laundry at 22h00. Great service.

My room.

I did 124km's today and it took me just under 13 hours to complete including stops. I got in around 21h00.
Had I known, I would have headed straight for Greylingstad as originally planned.
It will be interesting to see what my physical condition will be like to morrow, because I am severely unfit.
Night Sweetie.
